Varuna is a former Biomedical and Human Factors engineer who took the scenic route into medicine and ultimately found her passion in Critical Care. In her previous career, she spent her days trying to improve patient safety by redesigning medical devices, environments, and workflows. She obtained her MD from the University of Toronto (2017) followed by a residency in Internal Medicine (2021), and subspecialty training in Critical Care (2023), also from the University of Toronto. She enjoys leadership roles and served as Chief Resident and Chief Fellow during her specialty and subspecialty training. She currently works as a full-time intensivist at Lakeridge Health, where she also leads the Critical Care Response Team (CCRT) and Critical Care Clinical Assistant programs. She is passionate about patient safety, quality improvement, recognition of early deterioration, and medical education.
